St Joseph’s Beitbridge Mission

Overview

St. Joseph’s Beitbridge Mission’s establishment was initiated by the lay people who had already received Catholic faith. The then Bishop of Gweru, His Grace Bishop Alois Haene, made an arrangement that a Zimbabwean-based Priest be assigned to serve the growing community of Beitbridge. In 1971, Fr W. Kaufmann (SMB), from Matibi Mission, started visiting Beitbridge. Fr Flemming (SMB) also offered a hand as he also worked at the Mission. Fr O. Ruegg (SMB) chipped-in in April 1971. The first ‘resident priest’ was Father J. Stocker (SMB), who served the Mission from 1976 to 1983. Since the church site was not fully established to allow for accommodation, Fr Stocker bought a house from Mr Garry A. Jetterton in the low-density suburbs, (house number 113 Eland road) the house was now used as a Chapel. Fr Francis Camenzind succeeded Fr J. Stocker in 1983. Father J. Keller (SMB) came in October 1983 and also from June to October in 1995. In 1983, Father Xavier Ineichen (SMB) was transferred from Chiredzi to Sengwe area, which divides Beitbridge and Chiredzi. Fr Ineichen then established St. Mary’s Lutumba Vocational Training Centre.

In July 1988, Fr J. Greber (SMB) worked at the Mission and recorded 18 baptisms and in December 1989, Father Michael Bhasera worked at the Mission. He was with Father C. Matibhini who recorded a total of 26 baptisms. Fr Jules Greber (SMB) then came back and joined the Beitbridge community in 1994. During his stay, he was able to build two schools, St. Joseph’s Primary School and St. Mary’s Secondary School.

In 1996, Rev. Fr. P. Mambo joined the Mission and Fr Jakata also worked at the mission. In 1997 from June to December Fr T. Hugo worked at the mission. Father C.N. Magama joined the mission in 1999. Fr P.M. Siziba was also with the Beitbridge community in 1999. Fr E. Zandonda recorded in 2003 during his stay at Beitbridge. Rev Fr James Magadzire also worked at the Mission in 2010. Father James Munyanyi then joined the Mission in the year 2013. Father Mutsvanga joined the Mission in 2015. In the community there are Holy Cross Sister who are doing pastoral work. Currently Fr A. Mutoda and Fr W. Dziwore are working in the Mission.
