St Ambrose Matibi Primary School
Historical Background
St Ambrose Matibi Primary is a Catholic school located in Mwenezi District, approximately 33 km north of the Mwenezi District Education Office. The school premises were originally built in 1962. Initially, it operated as an Upper Primary Boarding School, but the Upper Primary closed in 1975 due to factors related to the Liberation struggle.
In 1976, a Home Craft program was established, offering training in Domestic Science, Religious Studies, and Life Skills for girls.
The Matibi Mission recognized the need for a local primary school, as children of the mission workers and the surrounding business community were traveling up to 6 km to attend other primary schools. Under the leadership of the Priest-in-Charge at the time, Rev. Fr. Mahefu Raymond, with the assistance of Rev. Fr. Mutuzu Robert and Rev. Fr. Stoffel Hermann, the necessary applications were made to the Responsible Authority and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.
St Ambrose Matibi Primary officially commenced in January 2013, starting with Grades ECD A to Grade 4. The current enrolment stands at 209 learners. Mrs Whande N has been the head since 2013.
