Mashava Primary School

Historical Background

Mashava is a Catholic primary school located about 43 km west of Masvingo. The school is about 2 km from the Masvingo–Bulawayo highway. It is in Bere 1 Township.

The school started as a small learning centre in 1959 at Rex Mine (now Lennox Mine) under the administration of a Catholic priest, Father P. Gaivin. The first enrolment was 49 learners and 2 teachers. It later moved to its current site in Bere Township, where the first block of 6 classrooms was erected. Its main obligation was to serve the children of some retired local miners and pensioners, since education facilities were scarce during those colonial days.

With time, the school has extended its services to children of resettled farmers around Mashava, gold panners, and stone carvers in the locality, as well as the families from the closed DSO and Lennox Mines. The current enrolment is 480 learners from ECD A to Grade 7, with 15 teachers.

Mashava Primary School has been on record for its high pass rates, which range from 90% to 100%, making it one of the best day schools in the diocese and in the district. Over the years, the school has produced a significant number of high professionals such as doctors, engineers, teachers, and nurses.
