Makambe Primary School

Historical Background

Makambe Primary School is in Matibhi 2 communal lands ward 10 south west of Chiredzi along the Chilonga old Boli Chikombedzi gravel road,10km west or 71km East from Rutenga using an all weather gravel road. Makambe Primary School is a Catholic school built  in 1963 under the leadership of Mr Ephraim Keke.

Father Frank Tallman was the priest in charge of this institution who invited Mr Bornface Makura a Catholic to head the school from Mulezu, classes were ranging from standard 1 to 6. Classrooms were built of poles and dagga.

1964-1974 saw Mr Makura transforming the school by building three cement and asbestos-roofed classroom blocks, he also constructed three teacher’s houses.

He is also greatly saluted for inculcating catholic ethos into school pupils as well in the community. In 1975-1976 during the second chimurenga all schools in Matibhi 2 communal lands were closed. The schools were later opened soon after independence,  this time under the curatorship of the Rural District Council.

In 2004 the school was handed over again to the Roman Catholic during the headship of Mr Chuma, who is also remembered for impressive grade 7 results as well as learner discipline.

It has 5 classroom blocks and 10 teacher’s houses. The current enrolment is 722 learners
