Overview
Fr. Joseph Michlig (SMB) was the first Catholic missionary to set foot on Berejena soil in the year 1949. During this time, there was a school near the Munaka Range border, which was run by Gokomere Mission and is presently known as Mupagamuri Primary School. When Bondolfi Mission was established in 1951, Mupagamuri, Berejena, Mandiva, and Ngundu were designated as outstations. Fr. Michlig was stationed at Bondolfi Mission, and his frequent visits to Mupagamuri enabled him to establish contact with people from Gwanya, Nemauzhe, Chiponda, Berejena, and Mutede.
Although Fr. Michlig intended to establish a mission in Mupagamuri, this proved to be challenging due to unfavorable physical conditions. He then turned his attention to the Matede area but discovered that the Dutch Reformed Church had already secured a site for a school near the present-day clinic. Seeking an alternative, Fr. Michlig found refuge in Berejena, where he was warmly welcomed. His vision materialized in 1955 when, in collaboration with the local community, he established a grass-thatched school near the present Berejena business center. Fr. Michlig aimed to use the school as a tool for evangelization, which significantly contributed to the development of the mission.
The establishment of the mission required a larger area than the existing one, as well as reliable water supply. Following correspondence with the Chibi District Commissioner, the current site for Berejena Mission was officially granted in 1955 under Headman Mutede. Additionally, a written request for the establishment of a hospital or clinic was submitted to the Director of Medical Services on September 1, 1958.
Fr. Michlig departed for Chikombedzi at the beginning of 1956, marking the formal establishment of Berejena Mission. Fr. Patrick Galvin succeeded him, working alongside Brother Freedom to develop future plans for the mission and strategize their implementation. An Italian builder was brought in to design and begin construction of key mission facilities, including a church, schools, clinic, convent, and presbytery. The mission also focused on forming a cohesive Catholic community.
Towards the end of 1957, Fr. J. Tschirky succeeded Fr. Galvin as the superior priest. He became deeply involved in the construction efforts at the mission and appointed Sr. Theresa (O.P.) as the headmistress of Berejena Primary School. Bishop Hacne also facilitated the arrival of Sisters to support the newly established Berejena Mission. Flora Jaison Ngondo was the first faithful to be baptized, she stayed in Chiponda village.
