Berejena High School

Historical Background

Berejena high school is a Catholic institution under the jurisdiction in His Lordship, Bishop Michael Bhasera of Masvingo Diocese. The school is 48km from Nyaningwe Growth Point 85km to the South of Masvingo town. The distance of 85km includes the distance of the dust road from Mandiva Primary School turn off alondg the Masvingo –Beitbridge Road. The dust road from the Mandiva turn off leads westwards to the school.

The school was founded by the Swiss Bethlehem Fathers (SMB) through the establishment of Berejena Mission in 1956 when Fr Michlig obtained permission from the local Chief Berejena to establish a school. Bishop Haene of the Diocese of Gwelo requested that King Williams Town (KWT) Dominican Sisters, Theresia Naddler, Agnella Renn and Antonia Farry came to Berejena Mission in 1958 from South Africa develop the central school, Secondary school, hospital and home craft school. The school opened in 1963 and operated as a boys’ secondary school  until 1980 to become a co-educational secondary school in 1981 when opened doors to girls.

The school also shared sorrows with the bulk of Berejena Community in 1976 when Father Paul Egli; (SMB) was arrested for one year and subsequently deported by the Rhodesian Government being mistaken for some political affiliation agent. III fate again struck in 1980 during a ceasefire presiding Zimbabwean independence when Father Killian Huesser(SMB) was shot to death at Berejena Mission.
