All Saints Rutenga Mission

Overview

All Saints Rutenga Mission started in1980 immediately after end of the Second Chimurenga arms struggle. About seven families mainly from the National Railways of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority communities constituted the first group of the faithful to this Parish. They gathered under trees and sometimes in old buildings at Rondavel Railway compound in the Railway station on Sundays.

Due to the increase of the faithful, a letter was written to Rt. Rev. Bishop Tobias Chiginya advising him of the small church in Rutenga by 1981. In that letter they requested for a priest to serve them.Within the same year, a number of priests from centres like Beitbridge, Ngundu, Chiredzi, Berejena and Matibi celebrated Mass to the Parish on almost every month basis. These priests included Fr Grabber, Fr Inahen, Fr Matibini, Fr Nyatsanza and Fr Aulerius. These also served Chambuta Refugee Camp, Chikombedzi, and around Chiredzi.

In the late 1980s, the Church through Fr Inahen and Fr Graf acquired land for a Secondary school, teachers’ houses, priests’ house, convent and church structures through the assistance of Mr Muchara of the Local Authority and Mr Kirismasi of Mwenezi Training Centre at Neshuro.

The Church construction started in 1993 to 1994 by the ChiCon builders. All Saints Rutenga Parish was officially opened by Rt. Rev. Bishop Francis Mugadzi in September 1995. The centre was named ‘ALL SAINTS PARISH, RUTENGA’. The name was proposed by the Parish Executive, seconded by Father Graf and so approved by the bishop. It  became a member of the Lowveld Deanery, Gweru Diocese with Father Graf as its first Priest-In-Charge. Neshuro parish was then placed under Rutenga Mission.

In 1999, Gweru Diocese got divided into two dioceses, namely Gweru and Masvingo. Rutenga Mission became a member of Masvingo Diocese, Southern Deanery which comprises of Beitbridge, Lutumba Missions.
