The church needs our support, Col Baloyi-Chiwenga urges Catholics

MASVINGO: In a heartfelt show of support for religious life, Col Miniyothabo Baloyi-Chiwenga showed up for the SJI Sisters Fundraising Dinner on the 20th of September at Bethany House in Masvingo where she urged guests to be supportive of elderly care.

Making a USD10 000 donation towards the expansion and renovation of the SJI Elderly Sisters Home in Driefontein, Col Baloyi-Chiwenga, wife to Zimbabwe Vice President (Rtrd Gen) Dr. G.D.N Chiwenga said her donation came from the bottom of her heart considering how the SJI Sisters dedicate their lives to pray for people who do not even pray for themselves.

“I donate from the bottom of my heart to appreciate our shepherds who in many instances pray for us when we are not even praying for ourselves. We should support the church for it is not merely an act of charity; it is a fundamental matter of justice and a human rights issue,” said Col Baloyi-Chiwenga while quoting international, regional and local statutes that advocate for the support of the elderly.

She also noted that the Catholic Church Canon Law (1983 CIC) mandates that the elderly be assisted and respected, and that provisions for their well-being be made within religious institutions.

“Every donation you give is not just a contribution, it is a tangible act of love to those who loved us first…those who authored our faith and who build the very foundations of our church,” she added.

The SJI Elderly Sisters Home in Driefontein is in need of essential upgrades including improved accessibility features, facility repairs plus expansion to ensure the health and safety of its elderly residents.

Catholic Diocese of Masvingo Rt. Rev. Bishop Mupandasekwa also graced the event.
