Overview
The Catholic Diocese of Masvingo was established on the 24th of April 1999 when Gweru was sub-divided into two Dioceses. The first Bishop of Masvingo Diocese, Rt. Rev. Michael D. Bhasera took canonical possession of the diocese from its establishment until 2022. Currently the Diocese is under the stewardship of Rt. Rev. Raymond Tapiwa Mupa, C.SS.R., from the 9th of December 2023. The Diocese of Masvingo has an area of approximately 70,000 square kilometres. It is located in the Southern part of the country bordering South Africa and Mozambique. It comprises of eight civil districts namely Beitbridge, Mwenezi, Chiredzi, Zaka, Bikita, Gutu, Masvingo and Chivi. The larger part of the Diocese is located in the Lowveld which falls under farming region five which has poor rainfall and hence poor crop production.
The Diocese is divided into nine Deaneries which are Bikita, Chivi, Gutu, Masvingo, Masvingo southern, Mwenezi, Lowveld, Zaka and Southern Deanery. The Diocese exists to evangelize: commits itself to renewing its way of living by being closely united to Christ through the word of God and the Sacraments. The Diocese remains committed to its vision of being the family of God united in love; seeking, following and proclaiming Jesus Christ.
