Mukaro High School

Historical Background

Mukaro is a Catholic and girl dominated school which was established in 1958 by the Holy Cross Sisters and was commissioned by his Lordship of the then Gwelo Diocese, sekuru Alois  Haene (SMB). It is located in Gutu district, south west of Gutu/Mupandawana growth  point and is 16km from Gutu growth point,82km from Masvingo and is 3.5km off the main Harare  Chiredzi highway to the north west of the main road. The main thrust of the school was the option for the poor focusing on the girl child;thus Mukaro Girls Secondary.

The first group of 35 girls was enrolled on 28 January 1958 and Sister Eunan and Sister Christophora were the first teachers being head and deputy respectively. Both were Holy Cross sisters. At the peak of the liberation struggle, the school was closed in 1979 and was re-opened in January 1980 with the first enrolment of few boys as day scholars from the local community. The boy population was boosted by the establishment of the St Kizito minor Seminary by his Lordship Sekuru Bhasera in January 2007. The school opened its doors for A-Level classes in 2005.

Mukaro high has a current student enrolment of 1023 and 31 teachers. Our students are from all over Zimbabwe.
