Mukaro CPS
Historical Background
Mukaro Central Primary School is a Catholic School in the Diocese of Masvingo in Zimbabwe. It was established in 1946 by the Bethlehem Fathers as a Centre of Evangelization through provision of holistic basic education. To date the school offers Early Childhood Education for learners with an age range of 3 to 6 years, Primary Education for learners with an age range of 6 to 14 years and adult nonformal education.
The school is located in Mukaro Mission farm which lies 12.5 km south of Gutu Growth Point along the Gutu Chiredzi tarred road. The school grew from a humble Christian background with enrollment less than twenty learners but gradually increased to hundreds in the 1970s, and ballooned to over a thousand after the country’s attainment of independence in 1980 when government introduced free education for all. To date enrollment has settled around 730 learners manned by a qualified staff of 22 teachers, 6 paraprofessionals and 1 ancillary worker respectively.
The school used to have a boarding facility which was closed at the peak of the liberation war in 1979, and thereafter attempts to resuscitate this facility, have taken a very low pace due to financial constraints. The history of the school would be incomplete without mentioning its quest for quality and relevant education such as the attachment of a teachers’ training unit in the 1960s which was suspended with the establishment of conventional colleges like Bondolfi Teachers’. In the 1980s a nonformal unit project, training adult learners’ vocational skills, was launched at the school with the initiative of a Holy Cross Nun. Since then, the Ministry of Education has adopted this project to become one of the best functional literacy programs in our province where adults are engaged in poultry, rabbitry, basketry and horticulture with supervision from the school. The school in turn has also made endeavours to vocationalize its curriculum for the benefit of the learners and is well set to take its education to reach greater heights.
